Water Of Life!
Jacob’s Well is a famous well whose history spans from the time of Isaac (Abraham’s son) to the time of Jesus’ ministry in New Testament times. It was just south of Sychar which is modern day Askar, and near Mt. Ebal.
Wells are man made places and were often the meeting place for the community. Water is required for life: man can’t live long with out water, thus the well was visited often. The farther the distance to the well, the more effort it became to obtain water. The farther the distance to the well, the more conservative one was with the water.
Jesus’ humanity required that He drink water like the rest of us. He used this object lesson to give us spiritual truth. Jesus went to the well for refreshing. Jesus used a metaphor to compare eternal life to a living spring of water in John 4.
A Samaritan woman was curious how Jesus was going to draw water from the well since He had nothing with Him. She was surprised that Jesus was even asking her for a drink of water. She was even more surprised when Jesus told her He had water that would be a spring of water welling up to eternal life. She received the message though, and ran into town telling many others!
How many times has Jesus asked you for something to drink? Jesus said, “…whatever you do for the least of these you do for me also…”. Therefore, serve the needy and jobless when you meet them. Serve those who simply need help. John 4:10 encourages us that if we could only recognize the gift of God when he speaks. Ask and receive living water. Jesus will give to anyone that asks.
Water even help us to understand the triune God; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Water can be in a liquid state, steam, and frozen; but all 3 states are water just as all three Persons are God.
In much of the world, people live in villages and depend on a central well just as in bible times. This is hard to fathom here in America, yet it is very common in most of the places in Africa that I have visited.
One such village in Ghana, Africa where we planted a church has no well. Their old well is brackish and not suitable for drinking. This village of 4700 people must walk far and carry water back on their heads. When they meet at the well, they visit with people of other villages. You can imagine that arguments over water can often break out!
If only 10 people were to donate the equivalent of their annual water bill, a well could be dug that would serve 4700 people for many years.
While you are at home today, notice how many times you use water. We drink water, we make juice with water, we boil food in water, we flush toilets with water, we bathe in water, we water our plants and lawn, we wash our car, and the list goes on. Now try imagine carrying this water on your head from a well that is in another neighborhood.
The craving for the water and the refreshment these people receive from drinking water is the type of thirst we should have for Jesus. Then imagine what life would be like never being thirsty again because we had a well of living water springing up into eternal life.
